How to Plan UW Graduation Photos: Routes, Timing & Regalia Tips

Start with the campus spots that mean something to you. A short route leaves more time for portraits and less time carrying a gown across campus. Tell me your must-have location before we pick the meeting point.

Choose a walkable route

Drumheller Fountain, Red Square, and the Quad offer different backgrounds on one campus walk. Add Sylvan Grove if the columns matter to you. Pick two or three priorities rather than trying to cover every landmark. Tell me about stairs or walking limits so we can choose an accessible route.

Plan around light and crowds

Early mornings can give us more room around busy landmarks. Late afternoon can work well for softer light, but the exact start depends on the season and shade. Cherry blossoms and a visible Mount Rainier depend on weather. We can still make portraits when neither appears.

Pack the details

Bring your cap, gown, stole, cords, and comfortable walking shoes. Check that the tassel and stole sit correctly before leaving home. Keep your phone and keys in a bag to avoid bulging pockets. If friends or family are joining, decide which group photos you want first.

Keep an outdoor rain option

Suzzallo’s exterior arches remain a useful photo location. Indoor plans depend on library access and photography rules. Unobtrusive snapshots are allowed, but staged graduation shoots in the Reading Room are prohibited by the published policy. We can keep the library on the route without relying on that room as a rain backup.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to know how to pose?

No. We can start with walking, adjusting your cap, and simple standing portraits. Tell me if you have a particular shot in mind, and bring a reference if it helps explain it.
